The latest Global Licensing Survey, conducted by Licensing International, reveals the main trends in the industry by examining 45 countries across the 7 major geographic regions, highlighting revenues for each segment (property type) and for each of the main (product categories). This is confirmed by the upcoming BLE Brand Licensing Europe, the leading European licensing fair, which this year sees companies, and even institutions that traditionally positioned themselves far from licensing, opening windows on the exhibitor floor for the first time.

Historically, the licensing industry has derived much of its revenue from the character/entertainment segment, which over the years has shaped the trends and characteristics of the sector. The character/entertainment segment, which today still represents a significant portion of the industry (41%, corresponding to $147.6 billion in retail sales), consists of 73% classic brands and major franchises, while the remaining portion comes from recently launched properties. In terms of brand type, the segment is split between 42% of brands related to film and television, and 38% from the worlds of anime, video games, and social media.
